Gaming is associated with an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle. No longer! Here are games guaranteed to sweat you out. That’s provided you get off the couch, of course.
EA Sports Active 2
Xbox 360, PS3, Wii. Rather than limiting you to a few fixed sports – which is more about fantasy than exercise – EA Sports lets you tailor your own workout. This means this a great tool for people who either have a pretty good idea of what they want to do, or who are being directed by someone who does.
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved
Xbox 360’s best fitness game by a wide margin, the difference is the highly interactive and ‘attentive’ coach, who really takes charge and challenges you to give your best. Options include Tai Chi and Yoga.
The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout / Challenge
Xbox 360 and Wii. Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels aren’t playing games. They’ve packaged 125 exercises and nutritional advice into an interactive package meant to work you out and get you in shape, with a minimal commitment to entertainment. If you’re hard core (yet not hard core enough to, um, join a gym) check it out.
Active NFL Training Camp
Wii. Now you can simulate training with your favorite team, going through all the drills they do. The only thing you can’t simulate yet is CONTACT and CONTRACT – there will be no concussions, and no millions of dollars deposited in your bank account.
Xbox 360. Kinect Sports gives you six games – football, bowling, table tennis, volleyball, boxing, and track and field – and there’s no cheating possible since your body is the control, so you’ve got to get up and MOVE to make the game work. Bring a friend.
Xbox 360. You see more and more chubby pop stars these days, but they’re still the minority and always will be. Why? One reason is that all that booty-wiggling gets you in shape! With Dance Central, you can wiggle your own ample bottom right along with them.
Xbox 360, Wii, PS3. What distinguishes Zumba Fitness is that it has 9, count ’em 9 different dance styles you can choose. Reports inform us that it’s a bit complicated at first due to too few instructions.
Wii Fit Plus
Wii Fit Plus uses the familiar Wii Balance Board to weigh you and figure out your body mass index. After that, there are over 40 fitness routines, letting you personalize your program.
PS3. Archery, beach volleyball, disc golf, table tennis, gladiator duel and bocce are an odd complement of sports, but it is a complement that lets you play solo in a way, say, football can’t.
